Nerd Radio

FT8 waterfall graph showing crowded bands.

The bands are alive! Lots more sunspots lately. And you know what that means? Wait… This is the wrong blog for this kind of post. Still, it’s the hobby that keeps my mind working on things that aren’t horrible.

I’ve been looking for good places to go fishing. I’m playing with my ham radio an awful lot. And Fathers Day is just around the corner. Are any of these things related?

It’s highly likely that they are.

Stick to the hobbies. Read the books. Enjoy the ride. Slow things down. As a friend of mine had in his email sig for years, “THINK: Where Available.”

Game Time

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2.

Before there were kids, there was the PS2. And my wife and I loved to play couch co-op games. A lot of those were the different LEGO games. But once we got to Baldur’s Gate, there was no going back. The first time through, we didn’t have our mojo. But once we realized that she is a barbarian meat shield at heart and I am some kind of tender elven wizard, we were unstoppable.

Since the BG:DA series, we’ve tried time and again to find something as cool and it just doesn’t exist. Yes, there are other couch co-op games, but none of them that are, as we call it, “Dwarfy-Elfy” enough. And yes, we tried Diabolo III and it was NOT what we wanted. It was too short and didn’t feel very immersive. (For me it was a total letdown when compared with the story of II, but that’s me.)

Before The Big Move in The Before Times, I snuck out and bought a PS2 at the local game junk shop because I found our copy of BG:DA2. I bought 2 controllers and an HDMI dongle goblin to do the necessary technology translation. Last night, I got it all set up – finally!

This weekend is gonna be grand. With a used copy of BG:DA1, we’re gonna kick it off and have some real fun – couch co-op style!

I am haunted by waters.

I read this book every summer. And sometimes again in the fall. I’ve read the short stories that are in this collection as well as the non-fiction “Young Men and Fire” and I always think, “Dammit… Why couldn’t he have written more?” And the truth is, he wrote what he wrote. It’s beautiful.

In a time of wild uncertainty, I think it’s time to open a cold beer and return to the rivers of Montana through his words.

Shortwave

A radio that has shortwave capabilities.
A fine shortwave radio.

In the world of tech, there are some things that never seem to die. We’ve seen an acceleration of communication tech over the past 20 years that is quite stunning. But as it has become ubiquitous, it’s also become less interesting. As a radio nerd I’ve turned to scanning through the shortwave frequencies looking for rare and weird things. This little unit does not disappoint.

There’s a world of things happening out there. From apocalyptic preachers to political screeds to music I’ve never heard before. Wild stuff to have on in the background as I work in my office in The New Normal.
